Historical Marker to the Lynching of Porter F. Turner

Here is a replay of the tribute video to the Porter F. Turner Historical Marker placed in Druid Hills in remembrance of the racial terror of that era.

The historic marker was installed on the southeast corner of Oakdale and Ponce de Leon with the support of the Druid Hills Civic Association, the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance, the Atlanta City Council, St. John’s Lutheran Church, and the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation.

The NAACP DeKalb Branch Remembrance Project and Druid Hills Group had the virtual dedication of a historic marker honoring Mr. Porter Turner on Sunday, June 6 at 4:30 p.m. A husband, father, and cab driver, Mr. Turner was lynched in Druid Hills on August 21, 1945.

This video features an original film with details about Mr. Turner’s life, comments by his family and Remembrance Project supporters, and the world premiere of a new composition, “No Song Left Untold” by acclaimed Atlanta composer Dr. T. J. Anderson. With lyrics written and performed by Amy Ray (Indigo Girls), the music honors the life of Mr. Turner and other victims of racial terrorism.
