The rules and nominating procedures are simple:

  1. The eligibility period for the service provided by the nominee is June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2024. Judges will only consider activities/services provided during the eligibility period. The exception is the Medgar Wiley Evers Freedom Legacy Award which is an award given for a lifetime of activity.
  2. The individual/group must not have received compensation for the service provided, i.e., it must not have been a part of individual/group’s job.
  3. Groups that are nominated must have served the DeKalb County community at large. Religious, fraternal, or professional groups that provide services only to their members are not eligible.
  4. All entries will be evaluated and narrowed to the top five in each category by the NAACP DeKalb’s Executive Committee. The finalists will be announced through a press release in September.  The finalists will be presented to the Freedom Fund Award Nominating Sub-Committee for final selection.  All decisions of the Sub-Committee are final.  The winner will be announced at the NAACP DeKalb’s Annual Freedom Fund Awards Dinner.
  5. The members of the Freedom Fund Award Nominating Sub-Committee will consist of 3 or 5 members of NAACP DeKalb, plus one alternate. Members will be nominated by the Branch President, the Chairperson of the Freedom Fund Gala Committee and two other persons from the Executive Committee, and then approved by the Executive Committee.  Anyone nominated or is a member of a group nominated to receive an award is disqualified from serving on the Award Nominating Sub-Committee.

  8. Pertinent supplementary information may be submitted along with the nomination entry form. This may include letters, newspaper clips, photos, etc.  Videotapes will not be accepted.
  9. Nominees must meet the criteria of the award for which they are being nominated. There will only be one winner for each award.  If no one is nominated or if no one qualifies for a particular award, then that award will not be awarded this year.
