Application Instructions
Please complete the attached application form to apply for the DeKalb NAACP MLK, Jr. Parade Essay Contest.
- Submit application and essay by mail or electronically by January 2, 2021.
- Applications must be postmarked or transmitted by 11:59pm. Late applications will not be accepted.
- Submit your completed application and essay to the DeKalb NAACP Branch at 3011 Rainbow Drive; Suite 180-A; Decatur, GA 30034 or information@naacpdekalbga.org.

Applicant Criteria:
* Applicant must be enrolled in DeKalb public school.
* Applicant must be enrolled in the 9th through the 12th grade.
* Applicant must write a 500 – 1000-word essay on the topic listed below.
* Applicant must complete the attached application and return the application with his/her essay.

III. Essay Evaluation Criteria
A. Support and Development of Ideas
1. Originality
2. Quality of writing
Style, clarity, flow, vocabulary
Syntax, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
3.Supporting Evidence
Convincing arguments supported with specific examples
Bibliography (3 or more sources)
B. Organization
1. Structure, paragraphing, introduction and conclusion,
2. Essay composed of no more than 1,000 words and not fewer than 500 words. (Word count
will not include citations and bibliography.)
