Unity Breakfast – Mobilize for Justice

The NAACP Dekalb Branch hosted its annual Unity Breakfast on April 29th at the House of Hope in Decatur. The theme for the event was “Mobilizing for Justice – Working Together for a Better Future.” The breakfast has traditionally been to update the community on issues that affect them and to encourage more of the community to join in the fight for freedom.  Rodney Harris, meteorologist and traffic anchor for Atlanta News First, was the event MC. Rodney was so funny and easygoing throughout the entire event. The event started and ended with a disciplined demonstration by the Southwest DeKalb High School NJROTC and there was a lovely song from the movie Moana sang by Niambi Powell, 4th grader at Browns Mill Elementary School.

After a delicious breakfast, Dr. Freda Hammonds presented awards for the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACTSO) Award Winners.  Gold, silver, and bronze medals, along with cash awards, were awarded to winners in each of 29 categories of competition in the sciences, humanities, business, performing and visual arts, and local and national entrepreneurship and culinary competitions.  The keynote speaker was Attorney Gerald Griggs, Georgia NAACP GA State Conference President. Attorney Griggs talked about the role of each generation in the fight for social justice and equality and encouraged the next generation to step into the limelight to push for real change.  Hear the full keynote speech here:  https://youtu.be/2x0_szJJEFE

NAACP Dekalb President Lance Hammonds offered closing remarks.  Our list of sponsors included Amazon, Dekalb County Probate Court and Judge Bedelia C. Hargrove, Georgia Power, American Family Insurance, Representative Becky Evans, Author and CEO Michael L. Thurmond, and Congressman Hank Johnson.
